Santa Maria Clock

The Santa Maria del Fiore canonic clock runs on Italian time.

Above the main door of the cathedral church (Duomo) in Florence is the colossal clock face with fresco portraits of four Prophets or Evangelists by the Renaissance artist Paolo Uccello. The clock dial shows the Roman numerals I to XXIIII running anti-clockwise. The hour hand indicates the time. The 24-hour clock was used for timekeeping in Italy. The medieval Wells Cathedral Clock in England is similarly a 24-hour clock, marked in Roman numerals from I to XII, then from I to XII again.

Giorgio Vasari - Lives of the Artists: Paolo Uccello

"...At the same time, and in the same church, he painted in colours the hour-dial above the principal door within the church, with four heads coloured in fresco at the corners."
