Luxembourg Gardens

The Jardins du Luxembourg located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, were originally royal gardens. The Palais du Luxembourg, home of the French Senate, is situated on the north side. They were established after Watteau's time, and are one of the larger gardens in Paris.

Monuments and Fountains

  • Monument to Auguste Scheurer-Kestner - Aimé-Jules Dalou.
  • Two statues of lions are by Jean-Baptiste Henraux.
  • Le Lion de Nubie et sa proie - Auguste Cain. The bronze statue makes an appearance in a painting by the Impressionist painter Charles Courtney Curran.
  • Harde de cerfs by Arthur Jacques Leduc. A group of deer.
  • Diane à la biche.
  • La Liberté éclairant le monde. The bronze statue (1870) was created by August Batholdi, who also designed the Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World) in New York City.
  • Medici Fountain. A central sculpture group shows the Greek mythological figure of Polyphemus who watches the lovers Acis and Galatea. It is flanked by allegorical figures depicting the rivers Seine and Rhône, the great rivers of France.
  • Fontaine de Léda. This fountain hidden behind the Medici Fountain includes an 1807 bas-relief of Léda et son cygne, intended for the Fontaine de la rue du Regard, surmounted by two Naiads by the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Klagmann. The story of Leda and the Swan is included in Ovid's Metamorphoses.
  • Fontaine de l'Observatoire also known as the Fontaine des Quatre-Parties-du-Monde designed by Davioud, Carpaux and Frémiet in 1873.

        1. Sainte Bathilde. Wife of Clovis II, King of France. According to some chronicles she came from England and was a descendant of the Anglo-Saxon kings.
        2. Sainte Clothilde. Sainte Clothilde was the second wife of Clovis, first king of the Franks.
        3. Blanche of Castile. Blanche acted as regent twice during the reign of her son, Louis IX. She was a patron of the arts and donated The Rose de France and its five lancet windows to Chartres Cathedral in 1230.
        4. Anne of Austria. Anne d'Autriche, the Spanish Infante, married Louis XIII at Burgos in Northern Spain.
        5. Anne de Bretagne, daughter and heiress of Francis II of Brittany.
        6. Marie de Médicis. Marie acted as regent of France.
        7. Marguerite de Provence. Margaret accompanied her husband Louis IX of France on the The Seventh Crusade.
        8. Marie Stuart. Wife of Francois II. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth II of England at Fotheringhay Castle.

        5. Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, duchesse de Montpensier. Mlle de Montpensier was the granddaughter of Henry IV and daughter of Gaston d'Orléans and Marie de Bourbon, duchesse de Montpensier.
        6. Laure de Noves. Muse of Petrarch.
        7. Clémence Isaure. The medieval "Queen of Poetry" is associated with the foundation of the Jeux Floraux de Toulouse. Floral motifs of gold and silver are awarded at the flower festival.
        8. Mathilde de Flandre, Duchess of Normandy. Matilda was the wife of William the Conqueror.
        9. Valentine de Milan, duchesse d'Orléans: "princesse aussi distinguée par sa beauté que par son esprit et son caractère" and the person "le plus immensément poétique de son époque"
        10. Marguerite d'Anjou, Queen consort of England: "Si vous ne respectez pas une Reine proscrite, respectez une mère malheureuse".
