Chalice of Abbot Suger of Saint Denis

The chalice was acquired by the abbot, and its carved Roman sardonyx bowl was reset into a new mount. The abbot recorded all his accomplishments in his book "On What Was Done Under His Administration". The chalice set upon the high altar, with resplendent reliquaries, gleaming processional crosses, multicoloured enamel eucharistic doves, or the sparkling lights of the bishop's crosier, was "nobly bright" and served to "brighten the minds" of onlookers.
