La Prisonniere

La Prisonniere "The Prisoner" by Marcel Proust (1871-1922) is part of the semiautobiographical long novel of French Expressionism, The Remembrance of Things Past. In the first volume of La Prisonniere a yellow wall in Vermeer's View of Delft, on display in the Musée du Louvre, leaves a heightened impression upon the visitor:

"a small piece of wall, painted such a beautiful yellow."

Proust also included a description of the Baroque masterpiece Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660):

"And as I played with Albertine's multiple tresses I could see but a single heart-shaped loop of black hair clinging to the side of her ear like the bow of a Velázquez Infanta."
